Question
I am a director in a private company and also a partner in an LLP. Do I personally owe professional tax?
Answer
Yes: in states that levy professional tax, directors and partners are personally liable to enrol under PTEC and pay Rs 2,500 a year, regardless of salary. In Maharashtra, for example, a company and an LLP must each obtain a PTEC for the entity, and every director or designated partner must also obtain a PTEC in their own name. A single PTEC covers you even with multiple directorships or partnerships, so you pay Rs 2,500 once per year per state. A partnership firm itself is often exempt, but each partner still pays.
