SIP Calculator — FAQs

How is SIP return calculated?
The calculator finds the future value of your monthly investment compounded at the expected annual return. It uses the standard begin-of-month (annuity-due) method: FV = P x [((1+i)^n – 1) / i] x (1+i), where P is the monthly amount, i is the monthly return and n the number of months.

What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up (or top-up) SIP increases your monthly instalment by a fixed percentage every year, so your investment keeps pace with rising income. This tool compounds each year at the higher amount.

Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund SIPs are market-linked. The return you enter is only an assumption; actual returns vary and can be negative in the short term.

What return should I assume for equity SIPs?
Over long periods many investors assume about 10 to 12 percent a year for diversified equity funds, and less for hybrid or debt funds. Use a conservative figure and review periodically.

Is SIP income taxable?
Gains are taxed as capital gains when you redeem units, not while the SIP runs. Use our Capital Gains Calculator to estimate the tax on redemption.
