How to use this GST calculator

This tool works in three steps. First, search your product or service by name (for example “laptop” or “restaurant”) or by its HSN/SAC code, and pick the matching entry to see its current GST rate. Second, the rate is shown with its CGST, SGST and IGST split and the CBIC notification it comes from. Third, enter your amount and the calculator works out the GST and the total — for either an intra-state sale (CGST + SGST) or an inter-state sale (IGST). You can also skip the search and type any rate manually.

GST rate slabs in India (FY 2026-27)

Following the 2025 GST rate rationalisation, India moved to a simplified rate structure. Most goods and services now fall under two main slabs — 5% and 18% — with a special higher rate for selected items and nil-rate for essentials.

SlabTypically covers
Nil / 0%Essential items — fresh milk, fresh fruits and vegetables, unbranded food grains, and certain life-saving supplies.
5%Mass-consumption goods — packaged food, most medicines, footwear and apparel up to the notified price threshold, fertilisers, and several everyday items.
18%Standard rate — most electronics, appliances, professional and IT services, and the majority of goods and services.
40%Special high rate — sin and luxury goods such as tobacco and pan masala, aerated/sugary drinks, and high-end vehicles.

A few items keep special treatment — for example gold and precious metals are taxed at a concessional rate. Because rates and price thresholds change with each notification, always confirm the exact rate for your item using the finder above.

How GST is calculated

On a GST-exclusive amount (add GST)

GST = Amount × Rate / 100. Total = Amount + GST. Example: on Rs 10,000 at 18%, GST is Rs 1,800 and the total is Rs 11,800.

On a GST-inclusive amount (remove GST)

Taxable value = Amount × 100 / (100 + Rate). GST = Amount − Taxable value. Example: if Rs 11,800 already includes 18% GST, the taxable value is Rs 10,000 and GST is Rs 1,800.

CGST, SGST and IGST split

For a sale within the same state (intra-state), GST is split equally into CGST and SGST — so 18% becomes 9% CGST + 9% SGST. For a sale to another state (inter-state), the whole rate is charged as a single IGST. The total tax is the same either way; only the split differs.

HSN and SAC codes explained

Every product is classified under an HSN (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) code and every service under a SAC (Services Accounting Code). The code determines the applicable GST rate and must be shown on GST invoices. Businesses with turnover above the notified limits must quote the correct HSN/SAC on every invoice. Use the finder above to look up the code and rate for your item, or enter a code directly to confirm its rate.

Reverse charge, cess and composition

Reverse charge (RCM): for certain notified supplies the recipient, not the supplier, pays the GST. Compensation cess: a few goods (such as tobacco products and some vehicles) attract an additional cess over and above GST — add it in the optional cess field above. Composition scheme: small taxpayers under the scheme pay GST at a low flat rate on turnover and cannot charge GST separately on invoices.

GST Calculator – Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find the GST rate for my product?

Type the product or service name in the finder above (for example “mobile phone” or “coaching”), or enter its HSN/SAC code, and select the matching result. The current GST rate, its CGST/SGST/IGST split and the CBIC notification are shown instantly.

What is the difference between GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive?

A GST-exclusive amount is the base price before tax — the calculator adds GST on top. A GST-inclusive (or “gross”) amount already contains GST, so the calculator works backwards to separate the taxable value and the GST portion.

When is GST split into CGST and SGST versus IGST?

For a supply within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state). For a supply to a different state, the entire amount is charged as IGST (integrated GST). The total tax is identical; only the heads differ.

What are the current GST slabs?

After the 2025 rationalisation the main slabs are 5% and 18%, with a special 40% rate for selected sin and luxury goods and nil-rate for essential items. Gold and a few categories keep special rates. Use the finder for the exact rate of a specific item.

What are HSN and SAC codes?

HSN codes classify goods and SAC codes classify services for GST. The code fixes the applicable rate and must appear on GST invoices above the notified turnover limits.

Are these rates official?

Yes. Rates come from official CBIC rate notifications and are updated as they change. Each result shows the notification it is based on. Figures are for guidance — confirm against the source notification before filing.
