Uttar Pradesh Shop & Establishment registration in brief

The Uttar Pradesh Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1962 (the U.P. Dookan Aur Vanijya Adhishthan Adhiniyam) regulates working hours, holidays, leave, wages and conditions of service for people employed in shops and commercial establishments across Uttar Pradesh. Registration is compulsory for every establishment — shops, offices, warehouses, restaurants and home-based or online businesses with a fixed place of work — and the certificate is routinely required by banks to open a current account and to support GST and trade registrations. Registration is done online through Nivesh Mitra, the state’s single-window portal.

Who must register, and by when

Every owner must apply for registration within three months of commencing business. There is no employee threshold — even a proprietor with no staff must register — and establishments with fewer than ten workers file an online intimation of commencement. On the portal, a single application covers registration (and the trade-licence requirement), and the certificate is issued digitally, generally within 7 to 15 working days.

Validity, renewal and penalty

Registration is granted for five financial years, and is renewed before expiry; a subsequent renewal can be taken for up to ten financial years. Failure to register within three months, or to renew on time, can attract monetary penalties and affect compliance status — and may hold up other registrations such as GST and business loans. Keep the registration active and updated for any change in ownership, address or business type.
