Tripura Shop & Establishment Registration — Fee, Validity & Documents
Tripura has removed the Shop & Establishment registration requirement. Section 16 of the Tripura Shops and Establishments Act, 1970 was deleted by the Fifth Amendment (2021), given effect from 26 April 2024, so shops and establishments no longer register under the Act – they obtain a local Trade Licence instead.
This is general guidance for Tripura, not legal advice. Confirm the current fee, forms and validity on the official portal before applying.
Tripura Shop & Establishment position in brief
The Tripura Shops and Establishments Act, 1970 continues to regulate working hours, holidays, leave and conditions of service. However, the registration requirement was abolished – Section 16 was deleted by the Fifth Amendment (2021), given effect from 26 April 2024, as an ease-of-doing-business reform. Establishments now obtain a local Trade Licence through the SWAAGAT single-window portal, which serves the same identification purpose that banks and other authorities look for.
What this means for you
You do not file a Shop & Establishment registration in Tripura. Instead, obtain the Trade Licence from your municipal / local body via SWAAGAT, and continue to observe the working-conditions provisions of the 1970 Act. Confirm the current position with the Tripura Labour Department if in doubt.
