What is the time limit to claim input tax credit (ITC) under GST?

Question

I forgot to claim ITC on some purchase invoices from last year. Is it too late?

Answer

You can claim ITC for a financial year up to the earlier of 30 November of the next financial year, or the date you file your annual return (GSTR-9) for that year. So for FY 2025-26 the cut-off is 30 November 2026, unless you file GSTR-9 earlier. Once this window under Section 16(4) closes, the credit lapses permanently. The credit must also appear in your GSTR-2B and the supplier must have paid the tax. Reconcile your purchase register against GSTR-2B before each return to avoid losing eligible credit.
