What is the ESI wage limit and contribution rate, and who is covered?

Question

I want to understand if my salary falls within ESI coverage and how much is deducted.

Answer

ESI covers employees earning gross wages up to Rs 21,000 per month (Rs 25,000 for employees with disabilities) in establishments registered under the ESI Act. The contribution is 0.75% from the employee and 3.25% from the employer, totalling 4% of gross wages. If your wages cross Rs 21,000 mid-period, coverage continues until the end of the running contribution period (April to September or October to March). ESI gives access to medical care, sickness, maternity and disability benefits. Both contributions must reach ESIC by the 15th of the following month.
